After waiting for the right moment, which took 40 years in coming, Eliot Ness and his family were laid to rest in a dignified ceremony September 10, 1997. Approximately 1,000 guests crowded around Wade Lake, on the grounds of Lake View Cemetery, to take part in this memorable event. The rain held off, and "the memorial ceremony for Eliot Ness was as moving as if he had passed away recently" one guest was heard to comment. Thanks to the generous support of the Police and Fire Departments of Cleveland, the ceremony was replete with Honor Guards, Color Guards, pipe and drum bands, Mounted and Motorcycle officers, the Aviation and Harbor Units, and a gun salute. Full honors were given to the fearless lawman who is fondly remembered for the significant impact he had on our city. We were pleased to have Honor Guard from Pennsylvania, and a pipe and drum band from Chicago. It took eight months of planning, a committee of seven, and generous assistance of many others to make this ceremony the success it was. A scrapbook of photos, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia from the September 10, 1997 event is on hand at the Cleveland Police Historical Society Museum. |
