The Cleveland Police Museum is honored to tell the stories of our Fallen Officers on the anniversaries of their End of Watch.
Described as “a quiet, faithful, brave and fearless officer”, Michael Kick served as a member of the Cleveland Police force starting in 1865. His “gentlemanly deportment and strict attention to duty” earned him the respect of his fellow officers.
On May 13, 1875, Kick and his fellow officers set up a surveillance of a gang suspected of several burglaries. As the gang moved through the streets, Kick and his partner intercepted them. The gang opened fire on the officers, who returned fire as the gang ran away. Officer Kick was shot in the chest. He died on May 15, 1875 and was surived by his wife Francesca and their four children, William, Mamie, John and Eliza.
Michael John Kick was the first Cleveland Police Officer to die in the line of duty.
